Differences Between UV Printing Varnishes

First, let’s understand what printing varnish is:Printing varnish is formed by spraying an additional layer of transparent protective coating over the printed pattern. When cured instantly under UV light, this coating determines the final quality and visual effect of the product.

A: Difference Between Glossy Varnish and Matte Varnish

Glossy Varnish

  • Visual Effect (High Gloss, Matte, Special Effects): It has a surface sheen, rich color saturation, and high vividness. It can achieve a mirror effect or a premium matte texture.

  • Tactile Feel: High-gloss varnish feels like glass, while matte varnish is smooth and fine. Textured effects can even simulate the special feel of leather.

  • Five Protective Properties: It offers high resistance to friction, scratching, fingerprints, and chemical corrosion. (For testing, you can wipe it with alcohol or a cleaning agent.)

  • Service Life: It significantly extends the outdoor service life and enhances UV resistance.

  • Cost & Process: The process is more complex, as an extra layer of varnish is applied over the base coating, leading to higher costs.

  • Application Areas: Phone cases, home appliance housings, electronic enclosures, high-end patterns (billboards, business cards), anti-counterfeiting products, etc.

Matte Varnish

  • Visual Effect: It retains the original texture of the material but lacks color saturation and vibrancy, resulting in plain, unremarkable colors.

  • Original Tactile Feel: The feel depends entirely on the material itself. There may be a slight uneven texture on the printed pattern, but the surface appears flat overall.

  • No Protective Properties: It is prone to scratching, wear, and has poor chemical resistance.

  • Service Life: Colors are susceptible to fading and damage when exposed to friction, light, or chemical substances.

  • Cost & Process: The production process is simple with fewer steps, enabling fast production and lower costs.

  • Application Areas: Suitable for low-cost, short-term use products or works that pursue the original, unmodified texture of the material.

B: Detailed Introduction

(1) Visual Effect (A Leap from Flat to Three-Dimensional)

  • Matte Varnish: It is formed by directly printing UV ink onto the material and then curing it. The visual effect relies solely on the inherent color of the ink; it lacks transparency and texture, presenting only a single-layered look, as if the pattern is merely "printed on" the surface.

  • Glossy Varnish:

It can achieve a variety of effects, such as matte, high gloss, and partial varnishing.
    • High-gloss varnish: Creates a mirror-like reflective effect, endowing the colors with a unique, modern technological appeal.

    • Matte varnish: Eliminates glare, giving colors a premium and elegant look, often used in high-end artworks.

    • Partial varnishing: Varnish can be applied to specific areas alone, creating a contrasting effect, highlighting focal points, and enhancing the premium feel.

(2) Tactile Feel (Beyond Looking—Now Touching!)

  • Matte Varnish: When touched, you feel the material itself—possibly the coolness of raw metal, the roughness of wood, or the soft flexibility of leather texture.

  • Glossy Varnish: When touched, you feel the varnish directly. High-gloss varnish feels like ceramic, while matte varnish feels like frosted silk, greatly enhancing both visual and tactile experiences.

(3) Physical Enhancement (From Fragile to Durable)

  • Matte Varnish: Its hardness depends solely on the material itself, with no special protective properties.

  • Glossy Varnish:

    • Scratch & Abrasion Resistance: Products with glossy varnish rarely get scratched by keys or coins, whereas matte varnish surfaces are extremely fragile and prone to scratches.

    • Chemical Resistance: It can resist alcohol and disinfectant cleaners. In contrast, matte varnish surfaces are easily dissolved or scratched by alcohol.

    • Weather Resistance: High-quality glossy varnish contains UV absorbers, which prevent patterns from fading under intense outdoor sunlight. This property is crucial for outdoor products.

C: How Big Is the Difference Between the Two?

The difference is significant! If you need a low-cost product, matte varnish is a suitable choice. However, if you want a premium, textured product that can withstand long-term outdoor exposure, glossy varnish—with its various effect options—is undoubtedly the best choice.
